South African film ‘The Last Ranger’ nominated for Oscar

South African film The Last Ranger, directed by Cindy Lee, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the 97th Oscars.

The nominees were announced at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles, co-hosted by actor-writer-comedians Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang.

The announcement, originally scheduled for 17 January, was delayed due to fires in Los Angeles.

Produced by Six Feet Films and supported by media personality Anele Mdoda, The Last Ranger tells a powerful story about rhino poaching and conservation efforts in South Africa.

It follows Litha, played by Liyabona Mroqoza, who embarks on a journey through a game reserve with the last remaining ranger, Khuselwa, portrayed by Avumile Qongqo. Their adventure takes a tragic turn when they encounter poachers, leading to a battle to protect the rhinos while uncovering a devastating secret.

Director Cindy Lee previously expressed excitement when the film was shortlisted, stating that having an IsiXhosa film addressing rhino poaching in the running for an Oscar makes her proud and that the film deserves to go all the way.

The winners will be announced at the Oscars ceremony on 2 March, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
